Interview: Insanely Detailed Artist Joe Fenton

The LullabyWe've featured artist Joe Fenton's beautifully intricate work before, and here are two more amazing pieces entitled “The Lullaby” and “The Joyriders.” Completed in graphite, “The Joyriders” took roughly 5 weeks to complete, while “The Lullaby” was finished in two and a half months! Each piece is very detailed and one can really get lost in the works.

We were fortunate enough to get an interview with Joe Fenton. You can see more photos as well as read the interview, below.

When you create these incredibly detailed pieces, how much improvisation goes into them?
The whole process of creating my art is very organic. I have an overall concept before I start a piece, this often changes as I progress. I build each of my works like a sculpture, adding and subtracting, and as this is happening many thoughts and ideas are streaming in and out of my head, some of the ideas make it into the piece and others don't.

What kinds of things have you been focusing on in 2011?
I'm currently working on the finishing touches to my collection. I'm planning a solo show in London for the new year. “Solitude” and my other works will be shown for the first time. Also I have just created a small piece for this charity. www.pencilsofpromise.org

The image will be auctioned off to the highest bidder online in the next month or so alongside submissions from Jonathan Adler, Lady Gaga, Chris Martin and James Joyce. Check out my Facebook for info and updates on this.

Can you give us a brief synopsis of what your latest pieces “Joyriders” and “The Lullaby” are based on?
The seven deadly sins appear in much of my work. I like to leave it to the viewer to attach their own thoughts and emotions to my work.

What's next is store for you?
I have quite a few things on the burner right now. My main focus is the upcoming show in London 2012!
