Taxi driver Issui Enomoto captures unique multiple exposure photographs of Yokohama, Japan and its residents as he drives around at night looking for passengers. He always keeps his camera with him in his taxi so that he can shoot various scenes of the town as they strike him. For this series entitled Taxi in the Sea, Enomoto systematically layers his images of ghostly figures and artificial light in camera as his nights progress.
Enomoto thinks of his lone taxi in the city as a small submarine traveling through a sea comprised of limitless components. He explains his analogy and his artistic motivation, saying, "From the moment I get into a taxi as a photographer, every component that can become a subject wraps me up. Like great pressure acts on an object in the deep sea by a physical law, the seawater components put fierce pressure on my five senses."
