The first museum in Italy to be devoted to modern works has finally opened in Rome. The MAXXI formally known as the National Museum of the XXI Century Arts. The facility has been under construction for a while and has not been warmly accepted by Italy's artistic elite. The country of course is home to an incredible bounty of classical art and architecture. This new museum, devoted to the avant garde, seems like it could be out of place.

The collections though promise to be worth a visit. They will house collections under two main headings: architecture and art. Under architecture the museum will have collections of architectural documentation (plans, designs, etc.) and architectural photography. Under art they will focus on important Italian and foreign artists of the XX century’s last four decades in order to "ensure the continuity between the most recent production and past experiences".

The museum's website is here and you can find them in Rome at Via Guido Reni, 4 A 00196 Roma f +39 06 32101829

  • I have to admit i was wondering about the terminology too... but it probably IS the first modern art museum. The tuscan town of Prato has a contemporary art center, but as it hosts exhibits and not a permanent collection, it cannot be called a museum. It is amazing that it has taken them so long to put together a permanent structure for modern art. This one looks like it will be architecturally significant; now let's hope the insides are worth writing home about.
  • I think the confusion is the phrase on its website "MAXXI art is the first National institution dedicated to contemporary creativity." This might well be the case - the Galleria d'arte moderna, aka Belli Arte, is simply a museum whereas Maxxi is a museum plus creative working environment. I live next door to the Belli Arte so am somewhat protective of it!
  • @Smith: I am astounded. I read at least four or five articles about this museum and also the material on the museum's website and ALL of them credited this museum with being the first to feature modern art. Guess thy all got it wrong! Thanks for letting us know.
  • "The first museum in Italy to be devoted to modern works has finally opened in Rome. "

Well apart from the "Galleria nazionale d'arte moderna" which since 1883 has been dedicated to the works of contemporary artists.
  • I'm diggin' how the exterior looks at night:

and the interior is typical Zaha Hadid (which I love):

  • Very cool! Definitely worth a visit next time I'm in Rome!
