Kyoto-based artist Niyoko Ikuta, one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Japanese glass art, produces evocative and enchantingly elaborate sculptures out of plate glass. In her Free Essence series, Ikuta uses her radiant sculptures as a way to play with the light as it bounces and bends through a myriad of crystalline facets, with different lighting and viewing angles multiplying these delightful optical intricacies even further. After sketching a work's design, she cuts sheets of simple window glass into thin panes and adheres them in delicate shapes and layers using a completely transparent glue, leaving us with these breathtakingly fluid forms.
