U.K. photographer Jocelyn Conway of Photojos Photography has come up with a clever way to capture the cozy sweetness of newborn babies: by nestling them in “bump bowls,” which take the exact shape of their mothers' previously rounded bellies.
Conway first introduced the concept in April 2015, finding inspiration from a body casting course she took five years ago—and now, it's her trademarked technique. She creates the plaster casts when the moms are about 34 to 36 weeks pregnant, using a safe and simple process that takes 20 minutes to complete. Then, when the little ones arrive, she settles them into the bowls with soft swaddles and blankets.
The symbolic significance of the props infuses the final images with heartfelt meaning, highlighting the supportive home that each mom provided for her child during the nine months of pregnancy. As one of Conway's clients explains, “[My baby] Stanley fell asleep in his bump, like he remembered it was a safe place…It was emotional to think just 11 days earlier he was actually still inside the real bump. We now have beautiful photos with a little something extra to keep and show to everyone along with my bump cast.”
