Elegant Wooden Desk Spirals Into the Heavens

Designer Joseph Walsh brings a modern and innovative style to his furniture designs. The Irish designer produces one-of-a-kind pieces that balance the line between function and form, serving as both decorative wooden swirls that fill a room as well as functional furniture like shelves, desks, and canopy beds.

Magnus Celestii is the artist's first work of such gigantic proportions. The enormous free form sculpture, currently part of the Design Show exhibition at the New Art Centre in Roche Court, Wiltshire, UK, begins as a desk in the center of the room. The magnificent layers of ash wood then curl upward in a spiral that grows outward, throughout the room, ending as a large shelf extending along one wall of the gallery.

According to the project statement, “The title of the piece derives from the Latin words Magnus (‘Large' / ‘Great') and Celesti (‘Heavenly'). Here, [Walsh] is conscious of the viewers' experience in the gallery while adhering to the creative language of collaboration between man and material.”
