Transcendent Photos of Antarctica’s Cavernous Blue Ice Glaciers

Photographer Julieanne Kost’s Blue Ice portfolio displays images of Antarctica’s astoundingly beautiful gradations of cerulean hues layered within its icebergs and glaciers. As an industry expert in Adobe Photoshop and digital photography, Kost was able to apply her skillful aestheticism when she recently embarked on an expedition aboard a zodiac boat to Antarctica and explored Black Head, Cuverville Island, and Pleneau Bay, amongst many other destinations. She manages to portray the photographs in abstract contexts that represent her own dreams and realities, while still allowing viewers to formulate their own individual interpretations.

Kost’s images of blue ice fully captures the untarnished, placid transcendence of the environment as Antarctica is the only place on Earth where these stretches occur. Blue ice forms when snow that falls on a glacier is compressed into the glacier itself, and air bubbles are squeezed out and ice crystals enlarge. As the polar sun peeks above the horizon, the translucent, crystalline surface reflects a stunning turquoise color.

As indicated on her website, “The combination of Kost’s passion for photography, mastery of digital imaging techniques and her degree in psychology, makes her photographic and fine artwork familiar, yet surreal with inventive and mysterious worlds where things are not quite as they seem.” Through her work, the photographer hopes to “engage the viewer with the image to allow them to leave the reality that they hold true and explore, even if only for an instant” and, she says, “venture into the visual placeholder of my thoughts and dreams.”

In addition to Blue Ice, Kost also photographs a wide range of subjects and locations through her travels, including many aerial landscape shots, which can be viewed on her website and Instagram.
