Complex Insect Sculptures Constructed with Matchsticks

These playful little creatures by artist Kyle Bean are a series of carefully handmade sculptures entitled Stick Insects. The Brighton-based designer has a knack for reconstructing everyday materials–everything from pencil shavings to eggshells to these meticulously organized matchsticks–into creative three-dimensional illustrations. He says his work fuses “our human relationship with science and technology and the everyday materials that are around us.”

There is a minimalist approach to the complex forms where each detailed bug shape is formed out of headless matches and simply held together with glue. For presentation, some of the winged butterflies and dragonflies were mounted in frames while others hung suspended in mid-air. To document the rare sculptures, Bean worked with photographer Owen Silverwood and he currently offers a limited edition run of 100 prints for purchase through his online shop.
