While most 8 1/2-month pregnant women are trying to keep off their feet, in preparation for their delivery, Los Angeles-based expectant mother Lea-Ann Ellison has been busy lifting weights. Already a mother of two and only two weeks away from giving birth to baby number three, Ellison has carried on her physically demanding CrossFit training throughout her pregnancy, which has raised some eyebrows.
The determined woman with child has been an avid CrossFit enthusiast for two-and-a-half years, typically receiving positive reinforcement for her rigorous exercise, but found she was met with adverse reactions once an image of her pregnant self lifting weights was shared on CrossFit's Facebook page. Ellison's photo stirred some controversy, garnering appalled reactions and criticism for what some are suggesting is reckless behavior that's harmful to her unborn child. However, there are those that support the physically active mother.
The response is split into two extremes, some condemn Ellison's actions while others cheer her on, commending her physical fitness routine. Ellison herself says, "[I] strongly believe that pregnancy is not an illness, but a time to relish in your body’s capabilities to kick ass.” She has even rivaled back, supporting her decision to lift weights and train while pregnant by changing her personal Facebook profile's picture to one that reads "Man with big belly does overhead squats and nobody cares. Woman with big belly does overhead squats and everyone loses their minds."
