Interview: Mother Takes Breathtaking Photos of Her Ten Kids

When she's not taking portraits of clients in Las Vegas, this rural Arizona-based mother is turning the camera onto her ten children. Lisa Holloway is a fine art photographer who has a knack for shooting stunning outdoor photos. Completely self-taught, she only uses natural light to take these breathtaking photos of her kids.

Lisa often gets asked how she finds the time to manage both ten children and a photography business. She writes on her blog that she's “had to make some serious cutbacks” and now only takes “the very rare client session.” She focuses on her family and her teaching. If you're curious about her children's names, they are (from oldest to youngest): Clint, Calista, Damien, Theron, Adrian, Quentin, Camille, Octavia, Elliott, and Gabriel.

We got in touch with the busy mom to ask her a few questions.

First, what's it like to be the mother of ten?

Being a mom of ten is amazing! My family has so many different strengths, interests, talents, and personalities. No one is ever lonely, and my home is never dull or boring. The house is filled with laughter, love, and good energy. Caring for ten children is a big job, and everyone is expected to pitch in to make things run smoothly. Because of our unique family situation, I truly believe that my children will grow up to be compassionate, capable, and responsible human beings. It takes a lot of planning and organization. There are days where I feel like I need a quiet vacation, but honestly, I wouldn't change anything for the world.

Where were most of these outdoor shots taken?

Rural northwestern Arizona – from Kingman, to Valentine, to Oak Creek, Sedona to the Flagstaff area and everywhere in between. The studio looking images were taken in my garage.

What do you hope to capture in the photos of your family?

I want to be able to look into the eyes of my children and see their souls. I think this is why I tend to gravitate more toward quiet, thoughtful expressions than huge smiles in my portraits.

What lessons have you learned as you capture them?

Patience – definitely patience! Also, sometimes the unplanned, unscripted moments are the most amazing. Go into things with an open mind and positive attitude and magic will happen!

Finally, what tips could you give to other professional photographers?

My best advice to other photographers is to stay true to your own vision. Do not be afraid to be yourself, and explore new ideas and concepts. There is only one you and THAT is what will make your work special and unique!
