Beautifully Haunting Self-Portraits That Are Filled with Emotion

This elegant collection of self-portraits by London-based photographer Mariell Amlie is filled with soft color palettes and strong lighting that lend to the haunting aura throughout each image. Amlie captures unbelievable emotion throughout her work, which quickly consumes the viewer and creates a quiet, meditative visual experience.

Amlie grew up on a very remote island called Andya, above the Arctic Circle in Norway and, as an only child, she spent a lot of her time alone, observing nature. She became interested in photography at a very young age and has been producing these amazing self-portraits across the past 8 years.

Throughout her work, the self-taught photographer captures herself as a single figure often surrounded by vast landscapes or small interiors, which creates the sensation of loneliness and isolation. “My self-portraits are quite personal and it is something I really enjoy doing,” explains Amlie. “It's almost like meditation. I don't think of anything trivial, just the feeling and the vibe of the location or the room.”
