Artist Uses 68,000 Colorful Clothespins to Form a Massive Tornado

Martin Huberman of Normal Studio has created the Sunrise Tender Vortex, a sculptural wonder that's made of exactly 68,000 colorful clothespins, and acts as a life-size wooden tornado. “Tender Vortex attempts to provide a simple and honest translation of human fascination with natural phenomena,” the artist explains. “Evidencing the sentiment that leads us to observe, study, grasp, represent, and even wish to ‘inhabit' those phenomena, if only for an instant.”

As for the sculpture's color scheme, it was inspired by the breathtaking sight of the sunrise upon the sea. It reflects the moment when the inky nighttime sky gives way to the bright light of day. In taking on this environmental approach, the work of art gives viewers the opportunity to see the natural world as they've never seen it before. They can even gaze up into the eye of the storm from the metallic resting place beneath it. Ultimately, Sunrise Tender Vortex is meant to heighten viewers' senses as they witness the merging of majestic and complex natural phenomena.

Sunrise Tender Vortex is currently on display at Buenos Aires' Museo MAR.
