Bamboo Cabin Shaped Like a Rice Dumpling Celebrates Taiwanโ€™s Culinary Heritage

In Taiwan, zongzi are the height of comfort food. Theyโ€™re petite, gelatinous rice dumplings meticulously wrapped in bamboo leaves, packed with everything from sweet pastes to savory pork. But beyond that, they also happen to be the inspiration behind Cheng Tsung Fengโ€™s newest project, hidden beside a bamboo forest hiking trail in Nantou, Taiwan. Designed for this yearโ€™s Nantou Bamboo Dream Festival, Fengโ€™s Bamboo Cabin Plan: Sticky Rice Dumpling is an exercise in gestural architecture.

In Xiโ€™an, China, the cityโ€™s Center Culture Business District (CCBD) has finally emerged. The district, whose design was spearheaded by the London-based firm Heatherwick Studio, is nestled just south of the cityโ€™s historic center, lodged between the ruins of the Temple of Heaven and the prominent Shaanxi TV tower. This rich heritage informs, but doesnโ€™t stifle Xiโ€™an CCBD, which brilliantly combines ancient influences with contemporary forms and functions.

Japan is a culturally rich nation filled with history that endures today. One prime example of this is Hลshi, a 1,300-year-old ryokan (a Japanese traditional inn) in the city of Komatsu. Founded in 717, it holds the record for the worldโ€™s oldest, continually run family business, as well as third oldest hotel in Japan. Since its opening, 46 generations of Hลshi family members have overseen the hotel operations.
