Menacing Shark Head Pops Out of the Concrete

Sharks can pop up in the most unexpected places. Well, mostly just in water-based locations, but it's always good to keep your wits about you in case you happen to bump into this installation by Lyon-based artist, Monsta. The French mixed media artist creates a variety of different paper creatures, monsters, and handmade toys that take on a playfully edgy tone.

This piece, deceptively entitled Flipper which suggests a friendly and approachable installation, is actually a predatory shark head that emerges from the concrete, poised and ready to sink its sharp teeth into anything that walks, or swims, past. A little more than 1ft x 1ft x 1ft, the geometric-like sculpture, with square panels and sharp edges, was designed out of wood and held together with screws. How shocking would it be to stumble over a shark head as you walked through a lot to your parked car!? In the project portfolio, the artist chose to present photos of the shark as if its wooden, and in reality, harmless teeth were snagged on the leg of a young teenager in jeans and a hoodie. I guess we can't be too scared of work by an artist with such a good sense of humor!
