As the amazing follow-up to his beautiful and moving photography books
Wisdom and
Creature, MUSIC is photographer Andrew Zuckerman's latest and greatest endeavor. This time, Zuckerman released the MUSIC iPad app - a first-of-its-kind book extension. The MUSIC app, like the book it is based on, features stunning portraits and interviews with more than 50 musical legends, young and old, including Ozzy Osbourne, Lenny Kravitz, Common, and Fiona Apple.
Zuckerman has a minimalist style - he likes to photograph on white, distilling his subjects down so that you can really connect with them (rather than being overwhelmed with a busy background). What pulled me in the most was watching the iPad app promo. It's a 1:29 journey you just have to experience yourself. Watch it,
here.
As Zuckerman states, “Because different people have different ways of enjoying media, we’ve created the MUSIC app to give the user the ability to choose how they want to experience this monumental and comprehensive project. Art books have stunning images and beautiful layout, but their size and weight can often leave them sitting on bookshelves and coffee tables. An e-book may be portable, but it’s simply text, and e-readers were not designed to present the content and complexities of an art or photo book. The MUSIC app was created to fill this gap and integrates all media -- text, audio and video.”
The app includes 3-to-7-minute films for each of the artists, along with the option to organize the entire text thematically, and the ability to share text -- creating a truly multi-dimensional experience and bringing the idea of portraiture to a new level. I asked for some samples of the kind of portraiture you can find both in the book and the app so you can see Zuckerman's style I've been talking about.

The app is available at
iTunes for $4.99. I just bought mine.
