Photographer Takes 8-Second-Long Exposures in 50 Cities

New York

Take a trip with us, if you will, around the world with Nicolas Ruel. The Montreal-born photographer will be our guide as we jump from city to city, experiencing its unique architecture and meeting its people...but there's a catch! We can only stay for eight seconds.

While studying film and international relations, Ruel took trips all around the world. It was during that time that he found his true calling, as a photographer. His signature series, called 8 Seconds, is comprised of photos taken with filters that reduce his digital camera's lens opening to a tiny f/512. He moves the camera from one view to another during one exposure, creating an intriguing eight-second, one frame movie.

Ruel has now photographed 50 different cities. The 8 Seconds project began in 2007 and will continue through 2015. His next solo exhibition will be at Thompson Landry Gallery in Toronto, Ontario from March 21 to April 15, 2013.

Love how Ruel has captured the distinct feel and energy to each different city.
