Amazing LEGO Star Wars Sculpture Re-Imagines M. C. Escher's Relativity

The Star Wars films are iconic and widely celebrated by fans spanning across generations since the original's theatrical release in 1977. They have truly passed the test of time. Similarly, M. C. Escher's famous lithograph print Relativity, from 1953, is widely recognized by the public. Both works have even seen their fair share of recreations, but 16-year-old Paul Vermeesch seized the opportunity to combine the two popular yet separate forms of art into one outstanding sculptural project he refers to as Stars Wars Relativity V2.

The Michigan-based teen used somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 LEGO blocks to re-imagine the complicated, illusionary piece where "up" and "down" are undefined. With a cast of familiar faces including Luke Skywalker, Obi Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, and Princes Leia, Vermeesch has created a stationary retelling of the original Star Wars trilogy in a chronological format that can be viewed in a counterclockwise formation.

Additionally, there are seven lights that illuminate the multilayered diorama from within, giving it a far more theatrical feel. As if that isn't enough, Vermeesch has even created a miniature movie theater in the back of the cubed sculpture by using an iPod Touch, embedded into the structure, looping ten minutes worth of cut scenes from the LEGO Star Wars video game.
