Personal Favorite Photographers

Here's a list of some of my favorite photographers. Each photographer possesses his own distinct style - a way of seeing the world in a unique light, angle, and composition. A strong sense of self emanates from behind the camera lens and projects itself into each and every photograph taken. Check 'em out.

Ben Watts
http://www.benwatts.com/
The brother of actress Naomi Watts, Ben Watts is a full time photographer who dabbles in a bit of everything: fashion, photojournalism, celebrity portraits, etc. As far as "style" goes, Watts uses just about every medium there is - stark and grainy, studio lighting and beauty.

Robert and Shana Parke-Harrison
http://www.parkeharrison.com/index.html
Intense and a bit scary, this duo will leave you feeling like you have just watched a frightening psychological torture film. There is a sense of loneliness with a side of crazy much like your apartment neighbor who has spent the majority of his life in a straitjacket and small padded room. Like nightmares? This is for you.

Zena Holloway
http://www.zenaholloway.com/zena.html
She is an underwater photographer and her work is breathtaking (pun intended). Seriously though, it is stunning. As the audience, you literally feel as though you are underwater as you slide from one photo to the next. She perfectly combines grace and meaning - quite possibly even better than photographers that work on dry land.

Troy Paiva
http://www.troypaiva.com/index.html
Paiva is, simply put, a landscape/still object photographer - but not what you're used to. The work is eerie and causes you to feel like you are the last person on Earth having survived a nuclear war. His use of lighting and gels casts a surreal and haunted effect on each of his abandoned subjects.

Tim Walker
http://www.timwalkerphotography.com/
Tim Walker is one of my very favorite artists. Ethereal - like a fantasy world. I literally feel like I'm falling down the rabbit hole. His use of desaturated colors is like easing into the cold water of his eccentric ideas - he doesn't want to shock you completely. But, my god, he's good.

Ami Barwell
http://www.musicphotographer.co.uk/menu.html
"ROCK 'N' ROLL" is the headline on her website. Barwell is a music photographer. She captures live moments, posed studio shots, and spontaneous candid "can't-ever-forget-this" shots. *sigh* You know she has one of the greatest jobs ever.

Tom Hines
http://www.tomhines.com/index.html
Hines is a bit vintage/a bit ol' school/and a bit like those paper dolls with the paper clothes. His colors are washed out and his models have a "dead" look that invokes that doll movement. His concepts are off kilter and he seems to have a thing for ice, but he's totally worth a nod.
