Interactive Origami Cubes and Glass Clouds Installation

A peculiar new installation just debuted at the 18th Biennale of Sydney. Called Anything Can Break, it's made up of origami cubes and clouds shaped like breasts that are hung from the ceiling of a large new gallery space in the recently renovated Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. Created by artist Pinaree Sanpitak, the clouds and cubes are illuminated by fiber optics and lined with motion sensors that trigger musical motifs in response to the audience's movement. Would be great to experience in person.

Here's her statement about this particular installation: "Anything Can Break (2011) started with the concept of ‘breasts’ and ‘clouds’ and ‘fragility’ for a space perched on a mountainside facing a valley in the south of France in 2007. During the exhibition of Breasts and Clouds, artists, writers, and musicians were asked to select musical pieces inspired by the paintings. The gallery visitors could choose to listen to the soundtracks if they wish. There was about five and a half hours of music. In 2009, I was encouraged to explore my works beyond sight for the visual-impaired. In 2010, forms of cubes with wings, inspired from a simple folded piece of paper appeared. The ‘flying cubes’ along with the ‘body’ and ‘breasts’ underline my attempt to expand our perception and alter our attitudes through different sensory modes, aroused by these seemingly different but connected rigid geometric and organic forms. The body has been a continuing focus in my work for the past 20 years. It explores sensory experience and perception. What matters to me is how the body becomes a site of transit, contemplation and understanding. The body – part or whole – ponders, wonders and challenges."

Considered to be the most exciting contemporary visual arts event in the Asia-Pacific region, the Biennale of Sydney which starts today, June 27, is free to the public over a twelve-week period or until September 16. It's on my list of top 10 must-visit art festivals around the world.
