Colorful Shattered Glass Illusion Captures the Essence of Early Morning

In order to produce the works seen in her recently-exhibited show titled Cool Translations at the Armature Art Space in Brooklyn, artist Rebecca Norton had to arise during the very early morning hours. This allowed her to capture the essence of this time of day and translate the fleeting light and color into gouache and vinyl on glass. The results are abstract, fractured compositions that highlight energy and movement through different angular shapes; this gives them the appearance of stained glass.

The artist represents a part of the day that is beautiful yet fleeting. Before you know it, the sun has risen and the world is alive. Norton shows its different iterations on several transparent backgrounds. As you look at one piece, you can see through it and to the other works that are beyond it. In this way, these framed pieces could also act as a map; they chart Norton's corner of the planet in an unexpected and thoughtful way.
