Shockingly Honest (13 photos)

Born on the Polish border of East Germany in 1944, Peter Lindbergh is considered to be one of the world's preeminent fashion photographers and is credited with helping to create the supermodel phenomenon of the 1990s. He has been described as a "poet of glamour."
One of the great masters of black and white photography, Lindbergh is acclaimed for his cinematic images, which have redefined the world of fashion photography with their compelling realism, lack of pretension and ineffable depth of emotion.
Lindbergh's current photography mirrors contemporary life. Describing his work, American Photo has said: "The most important quality in Peter Lindbergh's fashion photography is a forthright, almost shocking honesty. His models seem to open themselves emotionally to his camera. Amid the artifice, they seem real."

  • @Darrell- what a very detailed analysis you have given us!
  • Beautiful series, and great analysis Darrell!
  • I find it interesting that the first 4 images would be singled out as better. Here's some food for thought:
    2 models / 2 photo sessions. 1st model - 1st 4 images, 2nd model - other 9 images

    1st model:
I find the model to be more attractive
The near absence of environment forces me to concentrate on the model.
in 2 of her shots she is looking directly at me and in one she's looking at my right shoulder :0) (in fashion photography eye-contact is the #1 tool used to "engage the viewer")

    2nd model:
BUT, her session is closer to what I would consider "shockingly honest"
I feel that there is more mystery, more intrigue, more "story" in the later images.
I can't help thinking that the 2nd model is sad or anxious somehow.
  • Wow, these are astoundingly great! Thanks for sharing Laura! :)
  • They're all amazing but the first four are especially amazing. Great stuff!
  • The first four images are superb!
