Alternative Limb Project Features Cutting-Edge Designs

Designer Sophie de Oliveira Barata specializes in special effects prosthetics and uses her expertise for her surreal endeavor known as The Alternative Limb Project. As a specialist consultant, working with amputees and their prosthetists, de Oliveira Barata has embarked on a unique division of prosthetic production that blurs the line between artificial limb replacement and art.

While she also offers her skilled hand at creating realistic limbs, de Oliveira Barata's “surreal” and “unreal” lines of alternative limbs are the most unique and eye-catching attractions, boasting a variety of color and texture. Each of her designs offer a sense of individuality, allowing the customer to express their personality through their synthetic appendages. The artist says, “Having an alternative limb is about claiming control and saying ‘I'm an individual and this reflects who I am.'”
