Lullaby Factory Plays Music for Young Hospital Patients

Lullaby Factory is a playful installation that transformed the exterior of a boring, pipe-covered building into a fantastic display of creativity and imagination. Designed by artists Maria Smith and Je Ahn of Studio Weave, Lullaby Factory is directly across from the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London and is meant to be a secret place that provides pure entertainment for patients, their parents, and the hospital staff.

According to the artists, “Our aim for this project was to re-imagine the [hospital's] facing Southwood building faade as the best version of itself, accepting and celebrating its qualities and oddities; and rather than hiding what is difficult, creating something unique and site specific.” The fantasy landscape spans 10 stories high and 105 feet long, and is reminiscent of a Dr. Seuss landscape, with cheerfully rounded pipes that twist and turn throughout the piece.

Composed by Jessica Curry, the pleasant sounds that run through the pipes can only be heard when individuals put their ear up to certain listening pipes or by tuning into a special radio station. Studio Weave describes the music as “gentle, beautiful lullabies that create a calming and uplifting environment for the young patients to recover in.” When young patients peer out their windows, they will be pleasantly surprised by this fun visual display that carries them off into a world of imagination–a great distraction from the daily struggles of being cooped up in a hospital.
