Symmetrical Patterns Arranged Into Dazzling Floor Designs

Dutch artist Suzan Drummen creates intricate designs that spread across gallery floors in brilliant, circular displays. From a distance, the simple lines and colors can be viewed as organized symmetrical arrangements. Upon closer inspection, viewers will be pleasantly surprised by the tiny, chaotic complexities that are revealed.

Drummen uses crystals, chromed metal, precious stones, mirrors and optical glass to develop the vibrant, reflective patterns. The shapes interact with the interior space, altering the appearance of the architecture and filling it with dazzling light and color. The parts are compiled loosely on the floor so that design exists as a temporary, shifting installation which can easily be altered by anyone who wishes to interact with the art work.

Drummen says her work, “Originates from the fascination for watching. While playing with space, illusion, and optical effects, [she] examines what the eye cannot contain, [as well as] the limits of beauty and charm: When an image is tempting, when [is it] overwhelming and when [is it] repellent?”
