My Modern Metropolis

Taking old World War II photos, Russian photographer Sergey Larenkov carefully photoshops them over more recent shots to make the past come alive. Not only do we get to experience places like Berlin, Prague, and Vienna in ways we could have never imagined, more importantly, we are able to appreciate our shared history in a whole new and unbelievably meaningful way.

Update: Months after this post went viral, we were able to get in touch with Larenkov to ask him more about this series. Read that exclusive interview here.

the third picture is the Hofburg Palace in Vienna. Wonderful pictures (of a very sad time in history).

Hi Alice

I'll try to name as many of the places as I can. I'm a resident of St Petersburg so I can help with some of them, others will be guesses. I'm not a historian, so what I am writing is not gospel!

So, from top to bottom

- The top two are Germany I think
- Russian Museum, St Petersburg
- I think this is also St P, though I can't give an exact location
- Taken from behind St Isaac's Catherdral, St P
- I believe this next one is taken in a small garden, just behind Taverichesky Garden in St P, near Kavelergardskaya Street, but I may be wrong as a lot of the gardens in St P look very similar.
- not sure
- English Embankment, St Petersburg
- Zagarodny Prospekt, St Petersburg, looking towards the direction of Vladimirsky Prospekt
- (I think) Zagarodny Prospekt looking towards Technological Institute. I believe the red building on the right is / was a military hospital, though I could be wrong.
- not sure about the next three
- Entrance to Palace Square, St Petersburg (from Nevsky Prospekt)
- Nevsky Prospekt, St P, looking onto Kazansky Cathedral
- I think this is Troitsky Bridge, though it may be Palace Bridge, someone will need to confirm.
- really not sure about this, would guess it's somewhere in the Leningrad region in the direction of Novgorod but by no means 100% sure.
- another view of the embankment
- Gorokhovaya Street, St P
- The final one - I am pretty sure it's near Karloff Bridge in Prague. Only been there once but it looks familiar.

Simply fantastic! Thank you! Only I should want the name on all places/street.

Thanks for doing this - I don't believe this generation appreciates the sacrifices our parents and grandparents made against tyranny. Today, American Idol, iPhones and self instant gratification is the mindset of our children. I do not believe this generation has the tenacity and integrity to do what is right as our fathers and grandfathers did. We will all be brought down from within by our politically correct attitude and our naivety of the real world. God bless America.

Awesome, disturbing and a great reminder how thin our veneer of civilization is.
