This weekend's art+culture pick of the week certainly isn't the classiest. You've heard of Air Guitar, right? Think of Air Sex as its dirty younger cousin. At the Air Sex Championships, instead of rocking out with an imaginary guitar, contestants go on stage and pretend to have sex with someone who isn’t there.
Participants choose a clip of music, show up in whatever wardrobe they like, and then have two minutes to impress the judges. The only rules are laid down by the state, and since alcohol is served, getting naked is prohibited.
The concept for Air Sex originated in a small club in Japan, and YouTube clips of a Japanese oddity TV show from Britain burned up the Internet two years ago. When that video landed on Tim League’s desk, he knew it was a show that had to be brought to America. The first Air Sex Championship season took place exclusively in Austin, with semi-monthly competitions at the Alamo Drafthouse.
