Reading is such a great pastime when you have to ride on the subway for long periods of time. Getting lost in an exciting story, having adventures beyond your wildest dreams, and living vicariously through the lives of fictional characters can help any lengthy commute pass by rather quickly. With a good book in hand, before you know it, you have arrived at your destination!
The Underground New York Public Library is a photography project that features all kinds of New York subway passengers enthralled in a good book. Artist Ourit created the project and says, "I'm fascinated by how we apply ourselves to stories and discourse. In so doing, we shape who we understand ourselves to be." Traveling beyond the mere subway cars in which they sit, passengers reveal a little bit about themselves through what they choose to read during their travels. It's refreshing to see people reading from actual books rather than just on their e-devices. There's something nice about turning the pages of an old, worn book with stories that have been appreciated across generations of readers.
