US Mint Produces First Curved Coins to Honor Baseball

To recognize and celebrate 75 years of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the United States Mint recently released these three custom coin designs that include a $5 gold coin, a $1 silver coin, and a half dollar clad (non-precious metal) coin.

The products are the first curved coins produced by the US Mint and the rounded design distinguishes the pieces from other, more everyday coins. The convex side of the coin depicts a rounded baseball with stitching, while the concave side of the coin dips inward to form the pocket of a baseball mitt.

To select the final design, the US Mint held the 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin competition and the winning design, by Cassie McFarland, was selected from a group of sixteen finalists. The selected concept promotes two elements that represent the very basic symbols of the country's national pastime.

The coins also feature the text “Liberty–In God We Trust” which has been on all US coins since 1864. Only available in limited editions, the coins go on sale starting March 27, 2014.
