Expressive Marine Life Portraits Capture Fantastic Range of Fishy Personalities

If you’ve ever owned a pet, then you’re probably guilty of attaching a range of human qualities to your beloved companion. We've all done it—and who could blame us when our animal friends have such character!? Perhaps that’s why Visarute Angkatavanich’s portraits seem to really resonate with his audience: his collection of high-quality shots perfectly capture the quirky traits of his fishy subjects. Dramatic flowing fins and the blubbing gulps of adorable goldfish presented on dramatic black and white backgroundswelcome to a fish’s world.

The Thai photographer uses professional lighting techniques and crystal clear water to get his fantastic photos. Known for his brilliant portraits of Siamese fighting fish and a variety of goldfish species, Angkatavanich’s close-ups show off the best angles of his marine models. The brilliant splashes of color reflect off shiny scales as the animals are caught in motion. The Bangkok native was inspired to begin taking his aquatic shots from fond childhood memories of fish he kept as pets, and has since amassed a dramatic piscine portfolio.
