When Opposites Attract

Do opposites really attract? In these visually appealing graphics, they sure do! Undergrad students at the School of Visual Art designed these conceptual posters in a series called Opposites. The idea is to represent two opposing concepts in one cohesive design.

The very exclusive Visual Identity and Multimedia course at SVA is taught by Sagi Haviv, Ivan Chermayeff, and Tom Geismar of Chermayeff & Geismar, an acclaimed branding and design firm. The three partners guided the students in a successful designer's path by assigning projects that forced students to focus on simplicity like designing bumper stickers and stamps. With so little space to work in, students had to cut down on excessive designs and concentrate only on necessary visuals.

Haviv, praised as a “logo prodigy” by The New Yorker, says The Opposites poster project combines two important parameters: a strong conceptual aspect on the one hand, and on the other, a formal need to reduce ideas to their essence. These are two of the primary considerations when it comes to trademark design.
