Orangutan Sanctuary Is Giving New Hope To Endangered Primates in Borneo

In just 50 years, or the lifetime of an orangutan, humans have destroyed half of Borneoโ€™s rainforest and thereby endangered the lives of orangutans. Humans have invaded the rainforests of Borneo, where 90% of all orangutans live, for palm oil farms and coal mines. As a result, two-thirds of the Bornean orangutan populations has disappeared, leading the species to its current critically endangered status.

Adorable Monkey and Capybara Caught Snuggling Share a Bond That Transcends Species

At the Denver Zoo, two unlikely friends found each other and arenโ€™t letting go. Earlier this past summer, 16-year-old Baya, a black howler monkey, was transferred over from Brevard Zoo in Florida and introduced to 6-year-old Rebecca, a capybara. Though they are both native to Central and South America, itโ€™s highly unusual to see these two creatures together. Capybaras are rodents and stay on solid ground, while howler monkeys reside in dense forest canopies.

With an expanded 2025 edition, the International Pet Photography Awards is showing an even wider range of talent in the world of animal photography. This year's contest had over 4,000 entries from 45 different countries. The competition was fierce, but in the end, photographer Katie Brockman walked away with the title of International Pet Photographer of the Year. An award-winning St. Louis-based photographer, Brockman added the title to her already impressive list of achievements.

These scientific images are not only aesthetically pleasing; they also show the ways in which wildlife fights to survive. From clever camouflage to battling for resources, these images show both the beauty and struggle of life on Earth. With his beautifully framed photo of two saigas engaged in battle, Andrey Giljov won the competition.
