One of the World’s Most Elusive Wild Cats Is Caught on Camera in Iran

The elusive Pallas’s cat is native to the mountainous regions of Central Asia, but it’s incredibly rare to catch a glimpse of one. The small feline species with rounded ears and a grumpy face is named after Peter Simon Pallas, the Prussian naturalist who first described it in 1776. However, it wasn’t until 2012 that the Pallas’s cat was finally photographed, and we still don’t know very much about it.

That’s why the Phoenix Species Project, a global effort to recover a hundred of the world’s most threatened species, exists. Led by actor Leonardo DiCaprio’s conservation group Re:wild alongside Jeff Bezos’ Bezos Earth Fund, Age of Union, and the Todd Graves Family Foundation, the initiative has kicked off with a $200 million commitment.
