Google engineer Max Braun wanted his ordinary bathroom mirror to look more like the futuristic fixtures you'd see in the movies–the kind that transmit information directly onto the mirror. Though these smart products are not yet on the market, the parts for them are fairly easy to obtain. With this in mind, Braun decided to build his own mirror of the future.
The impressive DIY project required both hi-tech and analog materials: a two-way mirror, display panel, controller board, components, as well as arts and crafts supplies. After much experimentation and “some dead ends,” Braun finally discovered the right combination of parts that made his dream come true. The resulting mirror is sleek, modern, and most of all, very helpful when you're getting ready for the day.
Braun emphasizes that his project is a work in progress, but he's already programed some fantastic features into it. “The idea is that you don't need to interact with this UI [user interface],” he writes on Medium. “Instead, it updates automatically and there's an open-ended voice search interface for anything else.” The right side of the mirror displays the time and date, while the left side has current weather, a 24-hour forecast, and recent news headlines. In the future, Braun plans on adding traffic information and personal reminders, which will further enhance his daily routine.
