For two months, Illustrator and cartoonist Jillian Tamaki worked on a very cool project with Penguin Classics. She hand embroidered three literary classics in her signature style! (The covers actually wrap around and include french flaps.) To really understand the level of detail and the amount of patience this project must have required, check out the making-of photos on her blog.

Called the Penguin Threads project, these three books will be available in October 2011 not as embroidered works of art but as "beautifully produced" books that will be "printed with a sculptural-embossing technique that will emphasize the stitches," Tamaki says. "They will be tactile objects."Lovely.

Beautiful!!! I know Kindle has it's place in our modern society, but oh....how I love real books and these are exquisite! What a fabulous mash-up of literature and art.
