Using lyrics from old school '90's rap, artist Mark Drew created this funny mash-up, entitled Deez Nuts. The Australian-born, Tokyo-based artist painted large-scale scenes from classic Peanuts comic strips, originally by Charles M. Schulz, and then complemented each cartoon with lyrics from songs by Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Public Enemy, Notorious B.IG., and Digital Underground, among others.
Drew sets up hilarious juxtapositions where the adorable and innocent characters are paired with complicated and out of context phrases that match perfectly with their illustrated gestures and facial expressions. The project was originally a zine (a self-produced publication) and, more recently, the paintings and zine were on display at China Heights Gallery, a gallery located in Australia and co-founded by the artist. Drew's unexpected creations are an interesting contrast that encourages viewers to consider Peanuts characters in a different light and to stop and actually ponder the meaning of many 90's rap songs that we know and love. After viewing the project, you'll have Biggie in your head all afternoon!
