Meditative Moments of Solitude Expressed in Black and White

Self-taught photographer Miro Simko captures strikingly secluded moments in his series entitled Solitariness. Each photo features a single car, truck, or person moving along an empty highway or a deserted back road. The strong contrast between one long strand of road and a single subject creates a powerful expression of loneliness and isolation.

The Slovakia-based photographer focuses mainly on black and white photography, finding that he is better able to highlight the lines, shapes, textures, and contrast of objects that sometimes get lost in the distraction of color. By presenting the world in more abstract form, Simko transforms everyday scenes into quiet, captivating moments. “Taking photos lets me play with the perception of the outside world, and allows me express some of my feelings and personal views of surrounding environment,” explains Simko.
