Ominous Black and White Storms Convey an Incredibly Fierce Energy

Since 2009, California-based photographer Mitch Dobrowner's interest in weather has led him to seek out the magnificent and powerful displays that take place during a storm. Traveling with professional storm chasers, Dobrowner chases tornados, monsoons, and massive thunderstorms to capture these dark and frightening scenes which may quickly evoke a touch of anxiety in viewers.

By converting the scenes into black and white, the artist eliminates much of the colorful beauty that surrounds such natural phenomena and exaggerates the ominous sense of pending doom. Viewers are invited to inspect the texture of billowing clouds and the energy of a tornado touching down to the earth, all of which is juxtaposed with a sense of peaceful calm standing in the foreground.

With an adventurous spirit and a camera in hand, Dobrowner says that he wants to create “images that help evoke how I see our wonderful planet.”
