Small-Scale Scenes Reveal Captivating Narratives

At first glance, these playful dioramas by artist Rick Finkelstein seem like photographs of real people from a distance. However, upon closer inspection, each scene reveals itself as a small world of fabricated scenes and plastic figurines. Through these miniature models, the former-lawyer-turned-artist tells all kinds of narratives that captivate his audience. According to his website, Finkelstein, “crops the story to only include certain information which does not reveal the whole truth” in an attempt to spark the imagination of his viewers and to leave us up to our own devices to complete the stories in our minds.

In each small-scale scene, Finkelstein presents us with different events including an overhead view of a crowd swimming along the shores of a beach; romantic couples, lit by the moonlight and sharing a quiet moment; and factory workers laboring over machines in very dimly lit settings. He incorporates amazing details, from the leaves on the trees to the intricate patterns on the picture frames in the tiny art gallery. The artist brings his ideas to life in front of our eyes and we are left to wonder things like what will happen to the couple being stalked by the man behind the bush?
