Scotland’s Giant Mermaid (8 photos)

Standing 33 feet tall, a giant metal mermaid guards the entrance to the Scottish town of Cumbernauld. Her name is Arria, and she is beautiful. Designed by English sculptor Andy Scott, Arria stretches out her arms towards the town as if to protect it. The sculpture costs over $400,000, but residents are hopeful that she will bring them prosperity and good luck. A lighting rig has been placed inside the sculpture, set to a cycle which repeats every 48 minutes. As the show progresses, Arria can be seen in a variety of different colors. The textures of the design are highlighted in the evening in ways that cannot be seen in daylight hours.
