Beautiful Wood Panel Paintings by May Ann Licudine

For the recent October 17th show at Swoon Gallery in Los Angeles, artist May Ann Licudine (aka Mall) created some beautiful wood panel paintings. Her works are made of acrylic and wood, which she gets from a local lumber shop.

Originally from La Union, Philippines, Mall began using wood as a medium back in 2004, when she first discovered the works of Audrey Kawasaki. (One of our favorite artists!) As she tells us, “I immediately fell in love with her wood paintings. I suddenly found myself buying chopping boards, made of wood, at the local market. Working with wood as a base, I realized that it was faster and easier to paint acrylics on wood than oil on canvas; plus wood paintings look so unique and exude a warm cozy feel. Surprisingly, my first wood paintings were a hit with my clients. This success made me continue working on wood panels.”

Currently, Mall uses mahogany, mango, narra, acacia and tamarind wood but she'd like to try painting on walnut, cherry and birch. “I hear they have a different texture that could enhance my paintings more,” she said.

Love the subtle three-dimensional feel to them.
