Massive Polar Bears Enjoy a Magnificent Glowing Sunset

Many photographers have set out to document polar bears within their natural, snowy surroundings. Whether the animals are playfully rolling around in the snow or going for a quick swim, more often than not, they are surrounded by a stark white, wintry backdrop. However, in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, French photographer Sylvain Cordier stumbled upon this colorfully magnificent moment that shows a family of polar bears set against an absolutely stunning sunset.

Cordier spent three weeks in a boat, following a mother and her two large cubs around and photographing their everyday lives. As they sit calmly and observe the setting sun, it appears that the three bears had become accustomed to the sounds of the 67-year-old photographer's clicking camera.

The vibrant sunset is the perfect backdrop for the beautifully massive creatures. Cordier describes his experience: "One evening it got to about 6.30pm and I knew a sunset was imminent. I positioned my boat in the hope the bears would move in the right direction and then it all just happened by chance really. The atmosphere was absolutely extraordinary"
